Dr. Malav Trivedi, the founder of Zero Gravity Sciences, operates at the intersection of high-stakes space technology and human health. A pharmacist by training with a Master’s and Ph.D. in neuroscience, his academic foundation lies in epigenetics—the study of how daily environmental factors, such as diet, sleep, nutrition, and pollution, affect gene expression and bodily metabolism.
His journey to becoming a pioneer in applied space biology began by studying how microgravity might affect stem cell development and formation. This research led him to a remarkable technology developed by NASA back in the 1960s and 1970s: microgravity bioreactors. This system, which has been utilized on nine space missions and aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to culture human stem cells, became the foundation for his commercial breakthrough.
Engineering Life for Better Bioactives
In founding Zero Gravity Sciences with Dr. David Pollock, Dr. Trivedi’s core mission was to repurpose this NASA-derived zero-gravity bioreactor technology for a commercial application: plant stem cells and plant tissue culture.
The team realized they could solve a fundamental challenge facing industries that rely on delicate botanical extracts. NASA designed the bioreactor to grow three-dimensional human stem cells in a vacuum-like environment where no forces and no oxidation could occur.
Dr. Trivedi identified the crucial “aha moment” when they saw the opportunity to apply these same principles to botanical tissues on Earth. The objective was to maintain the plant tissue’s inherent biochemistry intact during the cultivation and extraction process.
The results were transformative: comparative analysis demonstrated a two to three times higher retention of antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins in their extracts compared to conventional, energy-intensive methods that rely on heat or solvents.
This breakthrough allows Zero Gravity Sciences to create a separate ingredient category for applications in skincare, cosmetics, dermatological properties, and nutrition. The company has also expanded its focus to include hydroponics and the development of nanoparticles for delivery systems in pharmaceutical and nutrition applications.
The Challenge of Commercial Integrity
While the science is rooted in complex, rigorous NASA-derived processes—utilizing precision-engineered bioreactors and highly controlled culture environments—Dr. Trivedi noted that the biggest challenge lay in translating this technology into a commercially viable platform without losing its scientific integrity.
When NASA conducts an experiment, it is often designed for one or two astronauts; scaling that process up for Earth-based commercial use introduces hurdles related to cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and, critically, storytelling.
“How do the consumers understand saying how does the NASA technology help my skincare?” Dr. Trivedi explained, highlighting the constant struggle to balance rigorous science with commercial accessibility.
Overcoming this required building a strong network of experts, bringing together engineers, scientists, biochemists, brand developers, and marketeers who could bridge the technical complexity with the practical application.
The Advice: Stay Curious and Grounded
Reflecting on his journey from academia to entrepreneurship, Dr. Trivedi offered two key pieces of professional advice.
First, he emphasized the necessity to stay curious. Curiosity drives exploration and creates connections between seemingly unrelated fields. However, this curiosity must always be grounded in science. He advises that for any scientific endeavor to achieve longevity and earn the public’s trust, it must be reproducible, peer-reviewed, and validated.
Second, he stressed the value of collaboration: “Don’t try and be an expert in everything.”. Instead, innovators should surround themselves with people who complement their skills and have spent time honing expertise in different fields.
Dr. Trivedi concluded with a powerful lesson about community and shared success: “Build those bridges between not just your ideas but also with and bring that whole community together because when the tide rises, everyone rises with it.”.
