At first glance, the Colorado Air and Spaceport might look like any other airport. “We’re a licensed general aviation airport and a reliever airport for the Denver region,” says Jeff Kloska. With over 500 based aircraft and 120,000 operations a year, it’s a bustling hub for pilots. But what sets it apart is its dual role as a horizontal-launch spaceport.
Unlike traditional vertical launches that dominate the space industry, this spaceport focuses on horizontal launches, allowing spacecraft to take off and land like conventional airplanes. “Being close to Denver International Airport, we can’t do vertical launches without interfering with one of the busiest airspaces in the world,” explains Kloska.
And, of course, being in the Mile High City gives the spaceport a fun tagline: it’s “one mile closer to space.”
Driving the Aerospace Industry in Colorado
Colorado is already a leader in aerospace innovation, with a highly educated workforce and world-renowned programs at CU Boulder. Many graduates go on to work in aerospace companies or start their own ventures.
“Our vision is to grow not just as a general aviation airport but as a hub for the aerospace industry,” says Kloska. This includes facilities for payload processing, mission control centers, and other infrastructure essential for space operations.
With commercial space companies like SpaceX leading the way in reusability and satellite refueling, the industry is moving fast. “Sustainability and reusability are the names of the game,” Kloska emphasizes.
Embracing New Technologies
The spaceport isn’t just about rockets. It’s also exploring disruptive technologies such as drones, UAVs, and electric air taxis (eVTOLs). These emerging technologies could see passengers boarding at spaceports like Colorado’s, or manufacturing operations taking place on-site.
Kloska notes, “Larger airports are watching these technologies closely since they’ll be key hubs for future transportation.”
Making Aerospace Accessible
One of the most inspiring parts of the conversation was Kloska’s “aha” moment: you don’t need a PhD in rocket science to contribute to the aerospace industry. Roles in welding, 3D printing, composites manufacturing, and even business operations are essential.
“You can be a podcast host, a marketing expert, or in finance,” Kloska says. “Aerospace needs all kinds of expertise, not just engineers.”
Balancing Aviation and Space
Running both a traditional airport and a spaceport has its challenges. Transitioning from aviation to aerospace required learning a new industry while positioning the Colorado Air and Spaceport realistically.
“We don’t put all our eggs in one basket,” Kloska says. By maintaining a diverse user base, the spaceport supports Denver’s aviation needs while advancing aerospace innovation.
The Future of Suborbital Travel
Looking ahead, Kloska is excited about suborbital, point-to-point travel. These aircraft take off like jets, switch to rocket or hypersonic engines for suborbital flight, and land like normal airplanes. “Within 10 to 20 years, we’ll see these operating commercially on a regular basis,” he predicts.

To fund future infrastructure, the Colorado Air and Spaceport is collaborating with groups like Altitude X in public-private partnerships. This ensures readiness for the next generation of aerospace growth, from eVTOLs to space operations.
