Engaging Students Ages 11 to 18
Simmons emphasizes that maturity and motivation matter more than chronological age. His students range from 11 to 18 years old, and some have already achieved remarkable feats, such as designing printed circuit boards for satellites.
“Our students have presented 110 technical papers across nine countries,” Simmons shares. “When students’ passions align with ours, amazing things happen—even if they’re younger than expected.”
Overcoming Challenges in STEM Education

- Institutional Inertia: Changing schools and systems to prepare students for 21st-century STEM careers.

Career-Defining “Aha” Moments
Simmons recalls two key aha moments:
- In the Classroom: Watching a student finally grasp a challenging concept. “At first, many kids say, ‘I can’t do this,’” he explains. “But with practice and guidance, they succeed—and their eyes light up.”
- In Space History: His students were the first middle school chosen by NASA to build a CubeSat, and witnessing a Falcon 9 launch their satellite into space was unforgettable.
Advice for Young Innovators
Simmons encourages students to:
- Take Risks: Embrace challenges and avoid being overly risk-averse.

The Wolf Pack and SmallSat Education Conference
Simmons’ passion project, the Wolf Pack, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports student projects and aerospace education. It grew out of the Aerospace and Innovation Academy to provide funding and mentorship for student-built satellites and other hardware.
The SmallSat Education Conference, held annually at the Kennedy Space Center, offers:
